THE EARLY FLOORS BENEATH OUR FEET!

Have you ever thought about where modern day floorcovering got its start?

Legend locates the origin of the floor cloth – a durable floor covering made from heavily oiled and decorated canvas – back to the 15th Century France – a direct spin off from table runners, painted wall hangings and tapestries.

A floor cloth was a generic term that referred to a carpet substitute of either treated or untreated wool, linen (flax), or cotton.   Floor cloths are one of the earliest forms of floorcoverings, attaining great popularity in England in the 1700's. They began covering portions of their stone or plank floors with cloth sturdy enough to withstand the tread of shoes and boots.  And sometime later, people began stenciling the cloths with colorful patterns or painted freehand with images from nature.

The floor cloth appeared very early on in the United States.  They were first imported by Americans during the early years of our history and eventually manufactured here. Interest in floor cloths declined with the development of linoleum around the turn of the century.  Todays alternative to the floor cloth is a beautiful area rug.  They protect hardwood floors; provide a soft standing surface and a lovely decorative accent to any room.  They provide an easily cleaned surface, which makes them ideal for placement in an entryway, under the dining room table or anywhere else that would benefit from a unique accent rug.

Contact us today and we’ll show you how to create a beautiful area rug by simply binding the edge of any of your favorite carpet remnants.
